Spring!!! Are we there yet?
I'm excited I signed up with REUZ Market www.reuz.ca to sell Lumago Design's upcycled, fairly traded accessories. It's a perfect match. REUZ is committed to providing a market for sustainable shopping. Where like-minded people who have an interest in upcycling, re-purposing and re-use come together.
In faraway Dumaguete City, in the Central Visayas region of the Philippines, UK-born Becky Stanbridge and a group of women living close to the garbage dumpsite create beautiful, fashion forward jewelry. All from used, recycled and upcycled materials. These handcrafted jewelry pieces are designed by the Lumago women themselves and the jewelries are named after the artisan. Every piece of jewelry is unique. No two pieces are the same. My favorite pieces are the recycled leather necklaces and bracelets with colorful paper beads. Check out what they do and their stories here.
Becky as the prime mover provides the means and the market. As a Social Enterprise they follow the principles of Fair Trade; providing a fair living wage, micro financing, regular workshops, cooperative style decision making, reinvesting profits back into the community. Learn more about Becky in my Q & A with her below.
Why do you love what you do?
I absolutely love what I do, sometimes I feel so lucky to have landed the job of my dreams by creating it myself. It's the most fulfilling and at the same time, challenging role I've ever had. I get to see first hand how what we do benefits the women that I work with, whether they're the ones making the beautiful crafts or the ones I'm selling to. I get to share beautiful jewelry and stories with the world. The possibilities are endless and we get to flow wherever the wind takes us. Plus I get to see, be around and talk about beautiful things and people all day/everyday!
Tell us something about living in the Philippines and what words do you live by?
It's laid back and full of life all at the same time.I'm more of a visual person but I am constantly inspired by other peoples words. Here are a few that have stuck:
"If you think you are too small to make a difference, try sleeping with a mosquito" - -Dalai Lama "Great things never came from comfort zones"
"The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new"
If you would re-invent yourself, what would you do?
Colour my hair funky colours, meditate more, spend more time in nature & treat my body better! :-)
